The idea for World Diabetes Day was conceived by Dr. Shaukat Sadikot, President of the IDF at the time.

The campaign was introduced in collaboration with the WHO to respond to the increasing prevalence of diabetes worldwide. In 2006, the blue circle symbol was adopted as the global symbol for diabetes awareness. The blue circle represents unity and solidarity among those living with diabetes and those affected by the condition.
